Handicap Bars / August 5, 2018 / MillicentChaloux.
There are enough diameters available to keep small or weak hands satisfied too smaller ones for hands that cant grip something so wide. Also available are colored rubber grips that you can attach to the grab bars and make it extra safe to hold on to. Depending on what your bathroom looks like you might think: "I dont want these ugly old grab bars in my bathroom! It will make the place look like a hospital room and I dont want that!" This is a fallacy. The bars come in shining stainless steel and white brushed nickel and old world bronze for that feel of home instead of the cold cruelty of a hospital room. The ends of the bars can be balls or ornate fixtures as well so you dont have to go pick out the standard just because it exists - there are plenty of items to choose from.
Certainly companies who provide in-home health care and homemaker services property maintenance and senior transportation can all meet our needs but they may not be in our budget so other solutions should be planned for as well before they become a critical dilemma. These are just some of the details that become part of the entire decision-making process when contemplating remaining in our homes for as long as possible. If the day comes when I can no longer drive I will have lost what I consider to be one of most cherished aspects of life as an adult. But since this is so important to me if I plan ahead now on how Im going to replace this loss of self-mobility when it comes I will be able to ease into that loss with so much more grace! As they say "Choose wisely and choose well." Think about the things that are so very important to you what you treasure and what you feel you cannot live without. It could be going out for lunch with friends or working in your garden. Perhaps traveling to see relatives across town or walking along the river. Plan now for how you can continue to do those things as your ability to do them changes and someone makes these decisions for you. Life is what you make it. Make it great.
Grabbing onto the bars helps people who have limited mobile abilities maintain their balance. Individuals with disabilities will require grab bars to be installed in their homes especially if they do not have someone to care for them throughout the day. The chances of falling or slipping while in the bathroom are always relatively high even with individuals who do not have limited mobile abilities. In the bathroom there is a lot of water supply. Each time someone washes their hands or takes a shower they might accidentally leave a few small puddles of water on the tile ultimately creating a hazard for anyone who enters.
Along with the disabled and elderly families with young children and even a pregnant mom will benefit from the extra added security in being able to safely enter and exit a bathtub or shower area. We all know slipping and falling on a wet bathroom surface is no fun and can be dangerous. The first point here is to be sure we have the correct bar. Being that this is a wet environment most bars are stainless steel but there are other moisture resistant choices such as powder coat paint brass and even different shapes that dont quite look like the traditional curve ended institutional stainless although stainless is the most functional and cleans up the best.
