Handicap Bars / August 5, 2018 / MillicentChaloux
Most grab bars are not designed to take a persons full body weight. Installation of grab bars is easy if they have the suction cup base you just stick the suckers on. This type of grab bar is easy to remove and re-install in another area. Most grab bars are however made for screw fixing which makes them a more permanent fixture. Grab bars can be made of plastic or chrome and can fit with most bathroom colour schemes. More expensive grab bars that have the suction cup type base include a suction indicator to show if the product is attached correctly and a soft grip finish making them more comfortable to use. The price of grab bars ranges from a couple of dollars to upwards of $40 depending on the material it is made of and the added features that it includes. This estimate of cost does not include installation.
Who really wants their shower or bathroom to look like a hospital room or somebodys grandmother lives there? There in lies the challenge with choosing a grab bar for a shower or bathroom project in a residential home. The first places these types of safety handrails were used were in institutional settings (hospitals schools etc.) where function and security were all that mattered. These original bars did not need to win any style points. This situation no longer exists. Fortunately people are living longer and they want to stay and enjoy their homes - but unfortunately most existing shower and bath spaces dont function well if a persons mobility is not what it used to be.
Grabbing on to items that are not meant for providing support will only make using the bathroom a risky experience. This is especially so in cases where the person tries to grab hold of the sink especially if it is a wall mounted one. Attachments not designed to provide support will only let the grabber down and could result in serious accidents and injuries. All bars and poles come in a variety of surface features and safety designs. You must shop around for the one most suitable for use in your bathroom. You must take into consideration the conditions and needs of the user focusing especially on the weight and also on what the user will need to use the safety feature for. Now more than ever the concept of remaining in our homes well into our senior years is becoming increasingly attractive. But before we make that decision there are some serious issues that need to be considered. First and foremost is our health for no matter how safe we make our home we need to be healthy enough to live on our own or at least with a minimum amount of assistance.
